Ah, Assisi

Got up at 4:00 am to catch our flight to Rome. Although the Hotel Fortuna was great and the people friendly, we were anxious to get to Italy and warmer weather. It was very windy and more than cool in Germany.

We had planned to walk to the airport with our headlamps-only 8 minutes, but the wind and rain gave us pause. Luckily the hotel shuttle was unexpectedly early and we boarded happily. The flight was great and cost about $25 each - no typo - $25 each on Ryanair - Germany to Rome. Arrived 30 minutes early and caught a bid to the Roma Termini- the train station. From the bus during our one hour ride we saw the Borghese Museum, the Forum, the Coliseum, and St. Peter's. Fantastic! Got our tickets from the automated machine and made the 9:50 am train with time to spare. Marvelous trains, fast and tidy, with a man coming by offering coffee, tea, etc. Lovely countryside after we left the different kind of beauty one sees in the city.

The sun of Italy hit us once we hit Rome. And it has been shining ever since! We got off the train on the valley below Assisi and could see the pinkish stone buildings and red tiled roofs. A short bus ride after we bought tickets in the little shop by the station. We wound our way up the hill to the city of St. Francis-San Francesco.
